The September 15 Book Club will feature a nonfiction book, The Color of Water: a Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride.  On September 22, 2016, President Barack Obama awarded McBride the 2015 National Humanities Medal “for humanizing the complexities of discussing race in America. Through writings about his own uniquely American story, and his works of fiction informed by our shared history, his moving stories of love display the character of the American family.”

Book Summary:

“Who is Ruth McBride Jordan? A self-declared “light-skinned” woman evasive about her ethnicity, yet steadfast in her love for her twelve black children. James McBride, journalist, musician, and son, explores his mother’s past, as well as his own upbringing and heritage…” (from Amazon) ” The two stories, son’s and mother’s, beautifully juxtaposed, strike a graceful note at a time of racial polarization.” (from NYTimes Book Review)
