SUMMARY:February 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Pandemic\, we will continue to hold the Cornell Club of Greater Buffalo Book Club Meetings over ZOOM. The Cornell Club now has their own ZOOM account\, so you will be receiving the meeting link in an email from Catherine March\, our Club president.\n \nRegister in advance for this meeting:https://cornell.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcqce6srDsoE9x3ivm5ike073MphTEBBdjcAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\nIf you have any questions\, please email or call me\, Celinda Crego at cac432@aol.com.\n \nThe February 9 Book Club Meeting will feature a book recommended by our November Special guest speaker\, Sung Woo. The Book is Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates.\nThe book is about 1950s suburban life in Connecticut. It was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1962\, and in 2005\, the novel was chosen by TIME as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present. According to the author\, “I think I meant it more as an indictment of American life in the 1950s. Because during the Fifties there was a general lust for conformity all over this country\, by no means only in the suburbs—a kind of blind\, desperate clinging to safety and security at any price.”\n \nThere are copies of the book in the Erie County Library System in different formats. Most of the libraries are now open for in person and/or curbside visits.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nTitle: Revolutionary RoadAuthor: Richard YatesDate: February 9\, 2021Time: 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Albright-Knox Presents: The Famous Art Collectors Who Created Modern Museums
DESCRIPTION:Albright-Knox Art Gallery Assistant Curator Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan will present “Power-Hungry Emperors\, Civic-Minded Magnates\, and Visionary Ladies: The Famous Art Collectors Who Created Modern Museums.” Today’s non-profit institutions that collect and exhibit art for the benefit of the public did not always exist. In this engaging talk\, we will hear the story of how major art collectors—from Emperor Napoleon to the financier Andrew W. Mellon and the socialite Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney—helped create the idea of museums as we know them today. \nRegister here. SUMMARY:Matt Urban Center Donation Drive
DESCRIPTION:Support our Community by Dropping-Off Items During a Week-Long Donation Drive \nJoin the Cornell Club of Buffalo in giving back to the community by donating home essentials to the Matt Urban Center to help provide a welcoming environment to previously homeless individuals.  The Matt Urban Center is named in honor of Matt Urban\, a Buffalo-born Cornell grad (’41) and decorated war veteran.  The Matt Urban Center’s mission is to provide programs that revitalize neighborhoods\, serve families\, and change lives. \nDonation Drive Details (Drop-off at 1081 Broadway\, Buffalo\, NY between 4/19-4/23\, 8:30am-4:30pm) \nThe current focus for volunteer/donate from home projects is “Welcome Packages” for the Center’s clients in Housing First and Rapid Re-Housing programs\, who are coming to the center from situations of homelessness. Some of them are placed in Matt Urban Center properties and some are scattered throughout the city of Buffalo; the common thread is not having much to start a new home. The welcome baskets are a nice way of providing some housewarming essentials to help these individuals get started in their new apartments. \nBelow is a list of items below that are often needed by clients at move-in time. Donors are to decide which items they would like to include in their packages – we realize it’s a long list and want to be mindful of cost. Some folks have filled a laundry basket\, tote\, or wastebasket with items. Others have just dropped them off in a box – it’s up to you! Any donation is greatly appreciated regardless of size or quantity of items.  \n\nHand soap\nPack of bar soap\nLight bulbs\nSponges\nDish soap\nToilet paper\nPaper towels\nCleaning products\nKitchen garbage can with lid\nGarbage bags\nBroom\nMop/Bucket\nPots and pans\nCurtains\nCups/plates/silverware\nShampoo\nToilet bowl brush\nBathroom waste basket\nTowels& washcloths\nBathmats\nShower curtain\nCurtains\nPillows\nSheet sets (size full)\n\nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)
