SUMMARY:Sept 2020 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Cornell Club of Greater Buffalo Book Club on September 15\, on ZOOM.  \n\nPlease register in advance here. Contact Celinda Crego ’79 at cac432@aol.com for more information.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe September 15 Book Club will feature a nonfiction book\, The Color of Water: a Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride.  On September 22\, 2016\, President Barack Obama awarded McBride the 2015 National Humanities Medal “for humanizing the complexities of discussing race in America. Through writings about his own uniquely American story\, and his works of fiction informed by our shared history\, his moving stories of love display the character of the American family.”\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Summary: \n\n\n\n“Who is Ruth McBride Jordan? A self-declared “light-skinned” woman evasive about her ethnicity\, yet steadfast in her love for her twelve black children. James McBride\, journalist\, musician\, and son\, explores his mother’s past\, as well as his own upbringing and heritage…” (from Amazon) ” The two stories\, son’s and mother’s\, beautifully juxtaposed\, strike a graceful note at a time of racial polarization.” (from NYTimes Book Review)\n\n\nALL of the Erie County libraries are now open for either curbside pick-up or to enter – check the library website.   The library reservation system is now available\, and books are being transferred between libraries (although it may take longer than normal). SUMMARY:August 2020 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The August 18 Book Club over ZOOM will feature\nSave Me the Plums :  My Gourmet Memoir by Ruth Reichl.\n\nThe book has been described in Vanity Fair as “A delicious insider account of the gritty\, glamorous world of food culture.”  It also includes some recipes.\n\nCopies in different formats are available in the Erie County Library System. Many of the libraries are now open for curbside service or for entrance\, and the book reservation system is now available.\n\nPlease register in advance to receive the Zoom Link: https://cornell.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYsc-6ppz0qGNJ6dn5JxykkbkIasCLOzTid\n\nBook Summary:\n\n“When Condé Nast offered Ruth Reichl the top position at America’s oldest epicurean magazine\, she declined. She was a writer\, not a manager\, and had no inclination to be anyone’s boss. Yet Reichl had been reading Gourmet since she was eight; it had inspired her career. How could she say no? This is the story of a former Berkeley hippie entering the corporate world and worrying about losing her soul. It is the story of the moment restaurants became an important part of popular culture\, a time when the rise of the farm-to-table movement changed\, forever\, the way we eat.”\nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:June 2020 Virtual Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The June 23 Book Club over ZOOM will feature a book chosen by Randy Chojecki: Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy\, Paternity\, and Love by Dani Shapiro. This nonfiction book discusses the very current topic of using DNA to find relatives. Copies in different formats are available in the Erie County Library System. Many of the libraries are now open for curbside service or for entrance. \nPlease register in advance to get access to the Zoom information. \nBook Summary:\n“In the spring of 2016\, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA\, Dani Shapiro received the astonishing news that her beloved deceased father was not her biological father. Over the course of a single day\, her entire history–the life she had lived–crumbled beneath her. In just a few hours of Internet sleuthing\, she was able to piece together the story of her conception and\, remarkably find a YouTube video of her biological father–his face and mannerisms eerily similar to her own.” \nFor event questions\, please contact Celinda A. SUMMARY:Cancelled - April 2020 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The April 7 Book Club will be hosted by Randy Chojecki. Randy has chosen Inheritance:a memoir of genealogy\, paternity\, and love by Dani Shapiro. This nonfiction book discusses the very current topic of using DNA to find relatives. Copies in different formats are available in the Erie County Library System.\n \n\nTitle: Inheritance : a memoir of genealogy\, paternity\, and love\nAuthor: Dani Shapiro\nDate: April 7\, 7:00 PM\nBook Summary: \n“In the spring of 2016\, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA\, Dani Shapiro received the astonishing news that her beloved deceased father was not her biological father. Over the course of a single day\, her entire history–the life she had lived–crumbled beneath her. In just a few hours of Internet sleuthing\, she was able to piece together the story of her conception and\, remarkably find a YouTube video of her biological father–his face and mannerisms eerily similar to her own.”\n\n  \nContact Celinda Crego ’79 at cac432@aol.com for more information. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:October 2019 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The October 22 Book Club meeting will be hosted by Andrea Mason at the Cornell Office in Market Arcade. Andrea has chosen the nonfiction book\, Botany of Desire: a plant’s-eye view of the World by Michael Pollan.\n \n“Michael Pollan ingeniously demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a reciprocal relationship. He masterfully links four fundamental human desires—sweetness\, beauty\, intoxication\, and control—with the plants that satisfy them: the apple\, the tulip\, marijuana\, and the potato. In telling the stories of four familiar species\, Pollan illustrates how the plants have evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic yearnings. And just as we’ve benefited from these plants\, we have also done well by them. So who is really domesticating whom?” (Amazon)\n\n\nThere are copies of the book in the library\, and a PBS documentary version of the book.
