Cornell Book Club – March 14, 2017

The next Cornell Club Book Club meeting will be March 14, 2017 (2nd Tuesday) at the home of Kathy Snyder Egan in East Amherst.

Kathy has selected the classic novella, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. “This tale of an aged Cuban fisherman going head-to-head (or hand to fin) with a magnificent marlin encapsulates Hemingway’s favorite motifs of physical and moral challenge.” (quote from Amazon)

In the Erie County library system, there are MANY copies of the book and audio versions.

Please let Celinda Crego  (cac432@aol.com) know if you would like to attend or host an upcoming Book Club meeting. The Book Club will be taking a break for April, and return in May.

Altschuler’s book, published in 2016 by the American bar Association and co-written with former Cornell law professor Faust Rossi, Ten Great American Trials, provides accounts of some of the most highly publicized  and fascinating  court cases of the twentieth century. The book also assesses the impact of cultural, social, and political values on the proceedings and the outcomes. The cases, several of which have been dubbed ‘the crime of the century’, were selected because they are dramatic, suspenseful, emotional, intellectually powerful, and have become part of American culture.

Glenn Altschuler is the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies at Cornell University. He received his PhD in American history from Cornell in 1976 and has been an administrator and teacher at Cornell since 1981. He is the author or coauthor of 11 books and more than one thousand essays and reviews. An animating force in the program in American studies at Cornell, Altschuler has won several awards for teaching and undergraduate advising.
