My fellow members of of the Cornell Club of Greater Buffalo  – For those of you who I haven’t yet had the opportunity to meet, I’m Catherine March, MEng ’14 and your Cornell Club of Greater Buffalo President for the 2020-2022 term. I’m delighted and honored to be serving as your President, having been involved with the club since 2014, and as the Vice President of Programming for the last 3 years. I’m incredibly grateful to be serving our Cornell community here in Buffalo — including alumni, current students, parents, and friends of Cornell — a community that has welcomed me so warmly since moving here after my time at Cornell. I moved to Buffalo without knowing anyone, and truly found a home here–an experience owing greatly to the strength and the bonds of our Cornell family. The Cornell Club of Greater Buffalo is the oldest known Cornell Club in University history, active since 1880. We have over 2,000 alumni in the area, with around 40-45 students entering Cornell from the Buffalo-Niagara region every year. We are a participation based model, so every local student and alumni is a member automatically, and we only charge fees for participation in some events. For the past several years, we’ve held events ranging from volunteer work days, hikes, farm tours, wine tasting, historic tours, Shakespeare in Delaware Park, Bisons Games, hockey games in Ithaca, speaker events, alumni panels, trivia nights, and our monthly book club which has been meeting since 2010. We also participate in University wide events like the Spirit of Zinck’s Night held in October and Cornell Cares Day in January. We know this year will be different. We will work to bring you events that are engaging and consistent with the University guidelines, while seeking to continue our mission. Our club is as strong and vibrant as the alumni in our community, and I look forward to meeting and interacting with many of you over the coming years. Enjoy an education staycation this summer

CAU is committed to providing you with opportunities to connect with Cornell and university faculty this summer. Because the pandemic prevents us from hosting the usual on-campus programming, they have developed a CAU Virtual Summer, which will offer free online content from July 6-31, 2020. Adult programming

Online offerings for adults will consist of weeklong courses, daily live lectures and discussions with Cornell faculty, and opportunities for interactive discussions with other intellectually curious people.See the full schedule and register now for an adult program

Youth and teen programming

For youth and teens, ages 9–15, CAU is offering free mini-classes led by Cornell students, video tours of research facilities, Q&A sessions with Cornell students, informational sessions with colleges, trivia contests, and other online educational activities.Learn more about youth and teen programming

Bring your beverage of choice, and make friends with Cornellians from Cornell Clubs in the USA (DC, MD, NY, PA, KS, CA, WA), Cornell Club of Hong Kong, and Cornell Club of Japan.

Mingle in small discussion groups centered around Cornell-related themes. Share your favorite spots in Collegetown, reminisce on the festivities of Spring/Slope Day, and learn how Cornell has changed over the decades.

We will use Zoom video chat and split everyone into small breakout rooms, so everyone has a chance to talk and share with just a few people. We will rotate everyone around, so you will meet many Cornellians through the mixer. We will start the video chat a few hours early, so come early if you may need technical assistance, and we will help you before the mixer starts. Please register in advance.

The June 23 Virtual Book Club will feature a book chosen by Randy Chojecki: Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love by Dani Shapiro. This nonfiction book discusses the very current topic of using DNA to find relatives. Copies in different formats are available in the Erie County Library System. Many of the libraries are now open for curbside service or for entrance.

Book Summary: “In the spring of 2016, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA, Dani Shapiro received the astonishing news that her beloved deceased father was not her biological father. Over the course of a single day, her entire history–the life she had lived–crumbled beneath her. In just a few hours of Internet sleuthing, she was able to piece together the story of her conception and, remarkably find a YouTube video of her biological father–his face and mannerisms eerily similar to her own.”
